Anurag Kashyap Explains Why He Won’t Work With Ranbir Kapoor, Says ‘I Don’t Have A Formula To Make…”
Anurag Kashyap praised Ranbir Kapoor but expressed his hesitation to work with him again.
While Anurag Kashyap feels Ranbir Kapoor is the finest actor, he explained his hesitation behind working with the Animal actor again.
Anurag Kashyap is known for making gritty cinema. However, when the director filmed Ranbir Kapoor in Bombay Velvet, it couldn’t do wonders at the box office. While Anurag Kashyap has been open about the film’s failure, he has always been vocal about his praises for Ranbir Kapoor as well as his wife Alia Bhatt. In a recent interview, Anurag hailed the two actors and also explained why he wouldn’t work with Ranbir Kapoor again.
Speaking with the entertainment portal PinkVilla, Anurag Kashyap explained, “Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt are the finest actors. And they’re a couple. Imagine the amount of talent in one house. If (Animal) is successful for him, it’s good for him.”
On being asked whether he would like to team up with Ranbir Kapoor again, the film-maker stated, “Main? (Me?) Who wouldn’t want to work with him? But mujhe nahi lagta ki main… bahut time lagta hai accept karne me. Dekho kya hai mere paas koi formula nahi hai blockbuster banane ka aur star jab experiment karta hai na toh mujhe bhi gaali padti hai aur usko bhi gaali padti hai” (But I don’t think… It takes a lot of time to accept. Look, I don’t have any formula for making a blockbuster, and when a star experiments, I get criticized, and so does he).”
He added, “Jab aadmi star ho jata hai na toh uske fans ho jate hai. Fan word kaha se aata hai fanatic se aata hai. So fans jo hai na apne star ko aise dekhte hai. Jo fanclubs hai ladte rehte hai aapas mein, ek invisible sa war chal raha hai non stop sare fans clubs k beech me. Toh agar aap uss fan club ko cater nahi ka rahe ho na toh star ke sath film banana bada mushkil kaam hai ek filmmaker k liye” (When a person becomes a star, he gets fans. The word fan comes from fanatic. So, fans see their star in a certain way. The fan clubs are constantly fighting among themselves; there’s an invisible war going on non-stop between all the fan clubs. So, if you’re not catering to that fan club, making a film with the star becomes a challenging task for a filmmaker).”
Explaining his point further, Anurag Kashyap stated that he doesn’t have it in him to churn out blockbusters, “Woh skillset kuch filmmakers me hai mere andar nahi hai. Aur mere andar woh himmat nahi hai ki main itni gaali khayu uss aadmi k liye jiski itni badi fan following hai. Agar letdown ho gaya toh? Blockbuster kab kya ho jata nahi pata chalta. Konsi film chal jati hai aapko nahi pata chalta lekin itne saal ke baad itna samajh me aa gaya hai ki woh blockbuster wala skill mere haath me nahi hai” (That skill set is in some filmmakers; it’s not within me. And I don’t have the courage to face so much criticism for someone with such a massive fan following. What if it turns out to be a letdown? You never know when a film becomes a blockbuster. You don’t know which film will work, but after all these years, I’ve understood that the blockbuster skill is not in my hands),” he concluded.
Meanwhile, in an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha, Anurag Kashyap reacted to those slamming Animal for its violent and sexist content. “I’m yet to watch Animal. I just returned from Marrakech. But I’m aware of the conversations happening online. Nobody has the right to tell a filmmaker what kind of films they should and shouldn’t make. People in this country get easily offended with films. They get offended with my films too. But I expect educated people to not get offended at the drop of a hat,” he opined.
