“Chak De India changed the coach’s religion from Hindu to Muslim,” says Annu Kapoor
Annu Kapoor on Chak De India:
Annu Kapoor is back with another controversial statement, and this time it’s got to do with religion. According to the actor, popular Bollywood sports drama Chak De India (2007) changed the main character’s religion from Hindu to Muslim deliberately.
During an interview with ANI, the Dream Girl actor said that the story of Yash Raj Films’ Chak De India was based on the life of a Hindu man, who was the coach of Team India. However, the film sees Shah Rukh Khan playing a Muslim guy, accused of cheating with the national team and then boycotted by Hindu neighbors.
Annu Kapoor said, “The main character in Chak De! India is based on the famous coach, Negi Saab. But in India, they want to show a Muslim as a good character and make fun of a Pandit (Hindu priest). This is something old, where they use the idea of Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb (Hindu-Muslim unity) to put a label on it.”
Chak De India was directed by Shimit Ameen and starred SRK in the lead role with a big bunch of female actors: Vidya Malvade, Shilpa Shukla Sagarika Ghatge Chitrashi Rawat, Vibha Chibber, Tanya Abrol, Nichola Sequeira, Shubhi Mehta, Sandia Furtado, Arya Menon, Anaitha Nair, Masochon Zimik, Kimi Laldawla, Seema Azmi, Nisha Nair, and Raynia Mascerhanas.
