The Star Wars universe is expanding again. As fans eagerly wait for the reunion of Mandalorian and Grogu on the big screen, along with Daisy Ridley’s comeback as Rey, Disney and Lucasfilm are in the early stages of developing a fresh trilogy. While plot details are under wraps, reports suggest the upcoming chapters will not continue the Skywalker Saga.
Instead, they will introduce a completely new story with new characters. Simon Kinberg, known for his work on Marvel films, will be writing and producing the trilogy. After numerous shows from Disney, these upcoming movies will mark Star Wars’ return to the cinemas, following the release of the last film in 2019.
Initial reports from Deadline confirmed that Kinberg’s upcoming trilogy would take forward the story from the 1977 movie, A New Hope, featuring iconic characters like Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia. However, multiple portals, including Reuters, have now clarified that this is not the case. According to an insider, “The new trilogy will begin with a fresh story and is not related to the Skywalker saga.”
Simon Kinberg is not a new addition to the Star Wars universe. He previously co-created the animated series Star Wars Rebels with Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck. The show, which aired for four seasons from 2014 to 2018, was also nominated for the Emmys. Kinberg also worked as a consultant on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the 2015 film directed by JJ Abrams that played a key role in reviving the franchise.
While appearing at the Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023 event, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said, “As you can see by all the television we’ve been doing, we’re exploring a lot of different storylines. This really spawns from what George Lucas said years ago, that he created Star Wars to move forward and backwards along a mythological timeline. Now we’re looking to broaden that timeline, building a rich future, expanding upon the present, and going deep into the past to tell our stories, and we’re thrilled to be working with some of the best and most passionate filmmakers on projects that will span the past, the present, and the future.”
Following the release of Rise of Skywalker in 2019, Disney has launched numerous series, including The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, The Acolyte, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Andor.
Currently, the studio is working on Jon Favreau’s The Mandalorian & Grogu movie, which continues the story of the popular Disney Plus series about a bounty hunter, played by Pedro Pascal. Several untitled projects are in the works with other filmmakers, including James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi and Donald Glover.
