Stephen King Says ‘Not Voting In The Oscars This Year’, Calls For Cancellation Over LA Wildfires
Last Updated:
Stephen King has called for Oscars 2025 to be cancelled this year in lieu of the Los Angeles wildfires.
Stephen King shared on his Bluesky profile that he will be abstaining from voting in the Oscars this year owing to the ongoing fires in Los Angeles. He voiced his opinion saying that Oscars should be called off in light of the devastation that has killed around 27 people till now. The Oscars event, meanwhile, is still scheduled for Sunday, March 2, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
King posted on Bluesky, “Not voting in the Oscars this year. In my humble opinion, they should cancel them. No glitz with Los Angeles on fire.”
Following the wildfires in Los Angeles, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had announced earlier that it would extend the Oscars voting period and postpone the nominations announcement to Thursday, January 22. In fact, the traditional Oscar Nominees Luncheon, which was originally scheduled for February 10, has also been cancelled. The organization has stated that $250,000 from the luncheon funds would be redirected to support wildfire relief efforts.
Earlier, actress Jean Smart, known for her role in Hacks, had also taken to Instagram to call on TV networks to reconsider airing award shows during this difficult time. Smart posted, “Attention! With all due respect, during Hollywood’s season of celebration, I hope any of the networks televising the upcoming awards will seriously consider NOT televising them and donating the revenue they would have garnered to victims of the fires and the firefighters.”
On the other hand, Rosanna Arquette had a different view as she told Variety, “This year, it’s not just about celebrating art. It’s about using art to rebuild, inspire, and help those who need it most. I woke up one night thinking, ‘What if we did a Jerry Lewis-style telethon and integrated it with the Oscars?’ Imagine Billy Crystal opening the show. He lost his home, but he’s the perfect person to unite the room and remind us of what we can achieve together.”
The Grammys have confirmed that their 2025 ceremony will still take place on Sunday, Feb. 2, as planned, but with added charitable efforts to raise money for those impacted by the fires.
Meanwhile, the fires have killed at least 27 people and 31 others are still missing. Entire neighbourhoods have been destroyed. The authorities have said it would take months to clean them up. About 82,400 people are still under evacuation orders.
