Some BOLD Bullshiit That Actually Dares Too Much
RATING – 2.5/5*
Emilia Pérez Review Movie Talkies:
Emilia Pérez has been gaining a lot of attention following the Oscar nominations, but is it really that good? Beware! The Oscars may be fooling you. However, that doesn’t mean it’s a bad film. It’s some bold bullshiit you might want to dislike in the first hour, but then the second hour makes you love it (to some extent). It’s daring, taboo-breaking, and intense.
Emilia Pérez Story:
The film is about a cartel kingpin, Manitas Del Monte (Karla Sofía Gascón), who expresses the desire to covertly undergo gender-affirming surgery and start a new and authentic life as a woman. He hires a struggling lawyer to manage these matters, and Rita (Zoe Saldaña) agrees for the sake of money. Four years later, they cross paths again, and this time Emilia wants Rita to bring his/her children and wife back. Manitas’ wife, Jessi (Selena Gomez), rekindles her romance with Gustavo (Édgar Ramírez), leading to a new conflict over who will keep the children.
Emilia Pérez, as a part of social acceptance of gender transition, has a bullshiit script; however, the intensity it carries actually brings it to shore. There are elements that seem too bold, unacceptable, and taboo, making it challenging for many to relate emotionally. Nevertheless, the gravity of those conflicts keeps you hooked.
The songs may sound artificial at first and detract from relatability. However, after a while, you become accustomed to them and begin to enjoy them. Now, that’s a difficult task for those who don’t understand Spanish or French (like me), because learning songs through subtitles takes away the soul.
The sexual intensity is quite high and sometimes overly exposed. A straight woman looking for her husband doesn’t take long to begin a lesbian affair. I wonder if she was genuinely married to a man as a straight woman or if it’s common to have dual sexuality for women in foreign countries? (In India, we can’t even conceive of anything like that, let alone accept it).
The musical narration isn’t exactly smooth, and if that’s the main attraction of the director, then I must say it’s a failure. However, if it’s about the storyline and its gravitational force aligning with trans people, then it’s a decent success. Jacques Audiard could have made it crisper, especially in the first half. But the guts he showed with this film deserve at least one big round of applause.
Emilia Pérez Cast:
Zoe Saldaña and Karla have both done good jobs, and even Selena wasn’t bad either. Adriana Paz, Édgar Ramírez, and Mark Ivanir’s support was fairly okay. Overall, it’s a tough film to digest since Trans/LGBT cinema isn’t what the majority of audiences love, but despite its overly dauntless structure, it still provides some cinematic value. In short, too bold and too daring, but not a “complete film.”
