Ramayana, the much-awaited big-screen adaptation of the epic directed by Nitesh Tiwari, has unquestionably created a lot of buzz. Since the announcement of Ranbir Kapoor being cast as Lord Rama and Sai Pallavi as Sita came out, fans have been awaiting new updates about the project. Ramayana is being deemed as one of the most expensive Bollywood films with the use of advanced VFX to bring the epic to life. As per latest reports, Namit Malhotra, the head of the VFX studio DNEG, has joined the film’s production team. In an interview, he discussed how he expects the film to transform the landscape of Indian cinema.

Namit and DNEG have won 7 Oscars for path breaking visual effects in films such as Interstellar and Dune. When questioned if Ramayana can achieve something similar in Indian cinema, Namit told Hindustan Times, “I do not doubt that it does (have the potential). In fact, it’s down to us and how we can actually bring it to the world. And that is where there’s a massive responsibility in doing that.”

He notes that there have been previous big-screen versions of the Ramayana that have not performed well and hence his crew recognises the importance of telling the story correctly. He stated that they are trying to be very careful, shooting everything with the utmost attention to detail.

Namit also believes that this film can take Indian storytelling to a global platform. He stated, “I’m keen to not just make India proud but excite the world about Indian storytelling and really celebrate global cinema together. It’s not like we don’t like Hollywood films. It’s not like we don’t see an Oppenheimer and have a great feeling, or a Forest Gump, or any of these, you know, landmark films. Their stories are universal. I believe this is universal too.”

The film will also reportedly include Yash as Ravana. Arun Govil, Lara Dutta, Sheeba Chadha, Ravi Dubey play prominent roles in the film. According to reports, the makers have also cast Sunny Deol as Hanuman. The Gadar actor has confirmed playing a role in the movie. During a previous interview with Screen, he said, “Ramayana is a long project because they’re trying to make it the way Avatar and Planet of the Apes movies were made. All those technicians are a part of it.” The first part of the film is expected to release around Diwali 2026 and the second in 2027.
