You can predict this story as soon as it begins. It follows the tropes of any teen romance. Pia offers Rs 25K a week to Arjun, an aspiring lawyer to get him to pretend as her boyfriend. She’s a wealthy Delhi girl; he’s from Greater Noida. He thinks love is a distraction, she thinks her world revolves around love. Her family’s patriarchal, his parents are liberal. Despite the differences, the two make a deal. She soft launches him on her socials before the big reveal. What happens when the two catch feelings.While Khushi and Ibrahim look good together, there’s no rush of emotions around first love or fiery chemistry between them. Without these elements, the audience deserves to be paid to sit through this sweet but rambling situationship.

‘Nadaaniyan’, directed by debutant Shauna Gautam, is a loose attempt at launching Ibrahim Ali Khan as this next-gen six-pack hero. But, the new-gen is not interested in just a six-pack abs showcase. The sets of the film look dreamy, but how far can beauty alone take you? Whoever thought that they could make a re-packaged Student of the Year fly again, didn’t know that there’s a limit to testing the audience’s patience. Not our monkey, not our circus!

Someone once rightly said even when you are a star kid it doesn’t really help if you don’t have the talent, that actually applies for Khushi Kapoor. With her expressionless face and frozen smile, she fails yet again. Learning how to act is hard work; it’s a craft and one needs to give their blood and sweat to make it big, it cannot be as easy as a little nip here and a little tuck there. As for Ibrahim, I still feel he has the potential to do well under a good director. First love is like a flame that never extinguishes, but Nadaaniyan is easily forgettable!

The story of the film is linear and without any complexities and twists because it clearly needs to focus on the two youngsters, their thought processes, and emotional dilemmas! Especially when the two, from two very different worlds, come together to co-exist. Will their differences play a role in their lives? Will their career choices affect their lives? And most importantly, does love conquer all?

Is Nadaaniyan WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) fare? Not really. It is happy skimming the surface of all it surveys. A film about the indiscretions and misadventures of teenage love should have been far more diverting.
