Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s relationship has influenced their upcoming album, I Said I Love You First, which they co-wrote together. Ahead of its official release, the couple took part in Spotify’s Countdown To podcast series. During the conversation, Benny, speaking about their creative process, mentioned that it felt like Selena’s “personal journal.” She further explained that their writing process wasn’t planned and felt their ideas were flowing naturally. Benny added that whenever Selena used to speak, he would secretly write down her words, thinking, “That’s such a good line for a song.”
In the podcast, Selena first explained, “We’d get up in the morning, we’d have conversation but our conversation was never going, what are we going to write in the album. It was very like, ‘this is on my mind,’ like ‘what is that, how does that make you feel,’ kind of thing.”
Benny Blanco intervened and said, “It felt like your personal Journal. I was just constantly writing whatever you said, wherever we were. Sometimes you’d be saying something really important and I would like, I didn’t know if you even realized, but I would always open my phone, I’d be like, ‘that’s such a good line for a song’.” Selena Gomez added, “I did notice but I also was very like, ‘you know me, I can just sit there and talk,’ so it didn’t bother me.”
In the Countdown To podcast, Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco are set to open up about their relationship and how their love story inspired their new album, I Said I Love You First. They will share personal moments, including small details that made it into their songs. The couple will also look back on their favourite dates and the early days of their romance.
Their upcoming album features 14 tracks, including songs I Said I Love You First, Younger and Hotter Than Me, Call Me When You Break Up (Selena’s Edition), Ojos Tristes, Don’t Wanna Cry, Sunset Blvd, Cowboy, Bluest Flame and How Does It Feel to Be Forgotten.
