A Brutal Structure of an Architect’s Life

The Brutalist Review Movie Talkies:

Brady Corbet‘s The Brutalist is somewhat deserving of the hype surrounding it for several valid reasons. The film is packed with superb performances, a good screenplay, fantastic cinematography, and fine direction.

The Brutality Story:

Corbet’s epic period drama focuses on an architect who migrates to the United States after surviving a holocaust. After being cast out by his brother for his Jewish background and identity, along with a failed project, he is hired by a wealthy man to build a “community center” consisting of a library, theater, gymnasium, and chapel.

He must compromise his designs for the budget while also caring for his ill wife and niece, as the wealthy family looks at them with a patronizing mindset. They shame him, but he continues his work until he is fired. Will he be able to fulfill the American Dream?

The Brutalist Cast:

The film boasts a stellar performance by Adrien Brody. His expressions of anger, fear, guilt, and compassion—everything is top-notch. The Brutalist explores some brutal events in his life, such as being raped, being unable to have sex with a prostitute, being derided by wealthy bosses, being slammed by his own wife, and most importantly, his inner struggles, whether religious or stemming from false pride.

Felicity Jones is remarkable throughout the film, especially during the bed scenes and her moaning while experiencing sexual pleasure and expressing pain. The third-best performance comes from Guy Pearce, while others perform quite well in their roles.

The Brutalist Movie Review:

The Brutalist may feel overlong when considering the overall essence of the film, but it justifies its runtime. However, it could have been edited better to avoid dragging moments in the middle. The background score and production design are superb, as the intensity and atmosphere are palpable on screen.

Director and writer Brady Corbet remains uncompromising with his vision and storytelling methods, restricting the film to only adults and art cinema lovers, but perhaps that is its greatest strength. The Brutalist contains artistic, intellectual, and brutal moments that can only be appreciated by art cinema fans, not by regular moviegoers. Overall, it is a good watch that may score well at the Oscars!
