The press conference for Akshay Kumar’s much-anticipated film Kesari 2 struck a deeply patriotic chord. Alongside producer Karan Johar, the actor reflected on the emotional depth of the story, his personal ties to the historical events, and the significance of telling untold chapters of India’s colonial past.
Sharing a heartfelt memory, Akshay revealed, “My grandfather witnessed the Jallianwala Bagh massacre firsthand. He passed those stories to my father, and in turn, I heard them growing up. This film is more than just a role for me—it’s a tribute to a legacy I’ve known since childhood.”
The film, inspired by the life of C. Sankaran Nair, sheds light on a lesser-known legal battle against the British Empire. Akshay credited director Karan Tyagi for presenting the story to him. “The moment I heard it, I knew I had to be part of this film,” he said. “History often hides what truly matters, and this film uncovers one such powerful moment.”
Akshay didn’t shy away from making a bold statement: “I want King Charles and the British government to watch Kesari 2 and understand the gravity of what happened. An apology will naturally follow—this film could be the spark.”
Addressing the CBFC’s decision to grant the film an ‘A’ certificate, he stated, “I trust they found it appropriate. There must be something they considered necessary.” Karan Johar added, “We respect their decision and accept the certification. Fortunately, there were no cuts requested.”
In Kesari 2, Akshay portrays C. Sankaran Nair, the lawyer who took on the British Empire after the brutal 1919 Amritsar massacre, where over 1,600 people were killed. The film also features Ananya Panday and R. Madhavan in key roles and is set for theatrical release on April 18.
