But ask him who stood by him through all the highs and lows, and he’ll tell you without missing a beat. It’s his wife, Tanya Deol. In a heart-to-heart with Instant Bollywood, Bobby got real about how important Tanya has been in his life, especially during the time he was trying to reinvent his career.
“My wife is my biggest support; she’s my backbone,” Bobby said with pride in his voice. “If I didn’t have her in my life, I wouldn’t be where I am today. She’s really beautiful inside and out. She handles everything. She’s been my strength.”
When Bobby was offered Aashram, a show that ended up being a game-changer for his career, it was Tanya he turned to first. He didn’t even tell anyone else at home. He just quietly took the script to her for advice.
“She’s always believed in me,” Bobby shared. “In fact, when I was going to do Aashram, I was really trying to change my image. I felt stuck because Bobby Deol was a star back in the day, and maybe people thought I wouldn’t take on the role. Nobody was coming to me with offers, no matter how hard I tried to get a good character role.”
It wasn’t easy. Bobby talked about the struggle. How he was literally knocking on doors, visiting people’s homes and offices, trying to get a role that would give him a fresh start.
“I had been visiting a lot of people’s houses and offices, meeting folks to ask for work. I started believing that I had to knock on doors, and I needed to discipline myself. I had to be prepared because if an opportunity came my way, I had to be ready to seize it.”
And then came OTT. For Bobby, it was the perfect chance to break out of the mold.

“When the OTT platforms came along, I got the chance to try out different types of characters, starting with Class of 83. Then, when I was offered Aashram, I didn’t tell anyone at home. I just asked my wife if she could take a look at the offer. It’s a really sensitive topic. She’s been with me throughout my journey. She said she understands what I want to do. I want to take on unique roles and create a new identity as an actor. She told me to go for it.”
The rest, as we know, is history. Bobby’s performance in Aashram was a turning point. He showed the world a completely new side of him. Dark, layered and powerful. And behind it all was Tanya, silently encouraging him to take the leap.
