The set-up is ripe for a slushy thriller, and the actors are an interesting mix, but the film never really takes off.But none of the mystery tropes the film reaches out for – unexplained noises, a black-robed soothsayer going into a trance, the family dog barking at suspicious movements– dials up the dread. The whole thing becomes a drone much too soon.

Pavan Kirpalani’s mystery-thriller draws you into its world using eerie silence and interesting jump scares. The sound in particular deserves an applause as footsteps on a wooden floor, fireplace, creaking doors, books shutting, pages fluttering set a nervous mood perfectly. Dimly lit old palace and it’s empty rooms speak a language of their own. Atmospheric and gloomy, the setting is perfect and unlike most Indian thrillers fear is not chaotic but quiet. Despite the odds, Gaslight has enough chills and thrills. If you like the genre, you won’t mind giving this a shot.

But one of the best bits about Gaslight is the twist pe twist in the end. The film blooms in the last 15 minutes and we are not complaining because that is where all the unravelling happens in thrillers. Extra marks for ensuring that the script doesn’t end as we apprehended. All in all, Gaslight is a rather refreshing cooler in the sea of psycho thrillers. It definitely deserves a watch.

But despite the partially smart script and the performances, Gaslight drags because of its rather slow pacing. A few jump scares here and there aisde, it does not keep you on the edge of your seat or even invests you in what the characters are going through. That means that by the time the climax arrives, you are on a predictable path. Still, the film does manage to surprise you with one final twist. And then, like clockwork, it descends into the predictable trope territory yet again.

Thrillers are a tricky genre for Bollywood to handle. They either manage to wow the audience — examples being Talaash (2012) and Gupt (1997) or they tend to backfire badly. With Gaslight, director Pavan Kirpalani tries his hand at the risque genre and manages to pass the test with grace marks. Gaslight feels like the 70s and 80s thriller movie that has got a new-age makeover. Those who don’t watch the genre that often can give this movie a shot. It is a decent one-time watch

What a waste of a promising title and genuine opportunity to address a socio-psychological malady. Instead, there’s some yap on privilege and class divide. Despite everything, I hoped the big reveal would make Gaslight’s skittish stroll to nowhere (even 144 minutes are too long) worthwhile, but the answers end up being embarrassingly obvious around a twist that’s pure hokum. Sans craft or cunning, Gaslight relies on the skills of its likeable cast to do the trick.
