Aamir Khan Reflects on the Risk Behind Lagaan: “It Was Supposed To Be The Biggest Industry Disaster”
Aamir Khan recently opened up in an exclusive chat with Instant Bollywood about his iconic film Lagaan, sharing some interesting insights into how the movie came to life and the challenges it faced.

Lagaan went on to become a massive success and is now one of the most beloved films in Indian cinema, but at the time of its making, things were far from certain.
Aamir Khan revealed that the decision to say yes to Lagaan wasn’t an easy one. He admitted that, at first, he wasn’t sure whether the film would succeed or fail. The script was compelling, but the concept itself was quite risky for mainstream Indian cinema at the time.
He said, “When I made Lagaan, I decided I would work the way I wanted to – just one film at a time. But I didn’t say yes to Lagaan right away; it took me a long time to decide.”

The actor acknowledged that Lagaan was unlike any other film being made in the industry back then, and many people, including his colleagues and friends, were doubtful about its success. In fact, they all believed it could end up as a disaster. Aamir recalled, “It was a super risky film back then. It was really unusual for mainstream Indian cinema. Now that we see it’s done so well, we can say – haa yeh toh chalni thi!”
Despite the widespread skepticism, Aamir trusted his instincts. He had a strong belief in the script and the potential of the film, but he also understood the uncertainty of success in the film industry. He reflected, “When we were making it, Lagaan was supposed to be the biggest disaster in the industry. My colleagues and friends had no confidence that this film would work.”

I Really Enjoyed Making It, Loved Lagaan Script – Says Aamir Khan
Aamir further shared that while he couldn’t predict the film’s outcome, the process of making Lagaan was deeply fulfilling. “I thought we were making a good film, but beyond that, I couldn’t really think about whether it would succeed or not. Nobody knows if it will work or not. But I knew I was making something I enjoyed, and I really loved the script of Lagaan.”
Looking back, it’s clear that Lagaan was a gamble that paid off, not just for Aamir Khan but for Indian cinema as a whole. It showed that taking risks and believing in your vision, even when the odds are stacked against you, can lead to remarkable success.
