The entertainment industry lost one of its veterans on December 8. Junior Mehmood passed away in the early hours at the age of 67. He has spent decades in the film industry and given some notable performances that will be remembered for years to come. The legendary actor had been battling stomach cancer for some time and spent the last hours with his friends and family. The actor’s health had deteriorated on December 7 and was rushed to the Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai. While his treatment was started, he could not make it. Junior Mehmood was the stage name of Naeem Sayyed, who began his career in the film industry as a child actor with the film Naunihal, which starred Sanjeev Kumar, Balraj Sahni, and Indrani Mukherjee.
In his later years, the actor stepped into the shoes of a director and worked primarily on Marathi films.
Junior Mehmood’s father was an engine driver, and his family lived in the railway quarters. He was the third of the six children. His elder brother was still a photographer in the film industry.
Naeem Sayyed was given the name Junior Mehmood by Mehmood Ali who eventually became his teacher.
Junior Mehmood will be survived by his wife, two sons, a daughter-in-law, and a grandson.
The actor is known for his remarkable performances in iconic movies such as Kati Patang, Brahmachari, Mera Naam Joker, Haathi Mere Saathi, and Caravan.
Junior Mehmood and Sachin Pilgaonkar were a popular duo back in the day as child artists. They have collaborated on films such as Bachpan, Geet Gaata Chal, and Brahmachari.
He has also appeared alongside Jeetendra in films such as Suhaag Raat, Caravan, Sadaa Suhagan, among others.
The veteran actor has starred in over 200 films in his career.
Reportedly, Junior Mehmood’s funeral will take place on Friday, December 9 at the Juhu Cemetery. Salam Kazi, a close friend of Junior Mehmood, informed ANI that the actor had been ill for two months, but the family initially thought it was a minor issue. Later His medical reports confirmed that he had cancer in his liver and lungs and a tumour in the intestine. The doctors had confirmed that it was stage 4 cancer. In his last days, he was visited by his closest friends from the industry such as Johnny Lever, Jeetendra and Sachin Pilgaonkar.
