The trailer of Curry & Cyanide – The Jolly Joseph Case, a new real-life crime documentary on Netflix India, has been released. The documentary is based on the real life case of Jolly Joseph, a lady suspected of planning the cyanide poisoning of six family members over more than ten years, including her two-year-old kid. The serial killings occurred in Koodathai village in Kozhikode district in Kerala. The documentary’s creators state that it seeks to highlight the striking contrast between Jolly Joseph’s public persona and the dark reality that lies beneath through first-hand accounts. Christo Tomy, a National Award winner, directed the documentary; while Union Editorial, a post-production firm located in the US, edited it.
Jolly Joseph is alleged to have committed the murders one by one with the intention of fraudulently obtaining the family’s property. The victims include her husband Roy Thomas, mother-in-law Annama Thomas, father-in-law Tom Thomas, Annama’s brother Mathew Manjadial, 2-year-old Cili and her mother Alphin of the same family. It is known that between 2002 and mid-2016, she had administered them cyanide one by one.
The shocking news came to light in 2019 when Majo Thomas, her father-in-law , complained about the death of a family member. Kozhikode rural SP KG Simon led the investigation. Preliminary investigations found discrepancies in the deaths of each family member, prompting police to dig up the graves of family members to verify. When the dead bodies were exhumed and a post-mortem examination was conducted, it was found that these deaths were not normal deaths but premeditated murders. Jolly Joseph was arrested in 2019 after all were found murdered. When Jolly was interrogated it was revealed that his cousin Ms Mathew had supplied the cyanide.
Curry and Cyanide – The Jolly Joseph Case is the third offering from India Today Originals, which has made a name for itself creating compelling, excellent true-crime OTT content. Netflix is presently offering its debut production, Indian Predator – Diary of a Serial Killer (Season II), for streaming. Dancing on the Grave, the second production, is available to stream on Amazon Prime right now.
