Phule, Ananth Mahadevan’s searing ode to these eternal revolutionaries, is a mirror held up to a society that still flinches at its own reflection. It is a reminder that progress is not a straight line, and history does not rest in peace. As long as oppression is repackaged in silence and systemic prejudice cloaks itself in civility, the torch carried by Jyotirao and Savitribai must burn—fierce, unwavering, and defiantly illuminating.

Phule, starring Pratik Gandhi and Patralekhaa, is poignant tribute to the 19th century social reformers. A historically grounded social drama, the Ananth Mahadevan directorial serves as thoughtful portrayal of Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and his wife Savitribai Phule’s legacy. It stands out a strong message of how the revolutionaries fostered a significant change, by fighting against caste discrimination and empowering women, on basis of their educational and intellectual skills.

It’s the simplicity of Phule that makes it a fresh bloom in the era of biopics. The intentions are clear and pure. Patralekhaa and Pratik Gandhi carry Ananth Mahadevan’s direction with strength, making it an important watch. It doesn’t preach or push hard, but instead encourages reflection, telling the story of reformers who have remained relatively underrepresented. The storyline rushes through significant moments, even within its slow-paced narration, briefly making you wish for a 10-second skip button. Still, it’s not preachy but an introduction to Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule’s undeterred passion of ‘kranti’ of the mindsets.

In conclusion, Phule is a remarkable homage to Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule. It beautifully sheds light on their legacy and the social causes they fought for. Although the film delivers an educational and inspirational storyline, it encounters some narrative flaws that hinder its full potential. Nevertheless, it captivates viewers with a compelling introduction to the roots of India’s social reform movement. The film powerfully conveys the lasting values of love and justice, showcasing the couple’s unwavering dedication to equality and education.
