Ranbir Kapoor has confirmed that his blockbuster film Animal is a three-part franchise. The actor was recently speaking to Deadline on the sidelines of the Red Sea Film Festival when he also shared a big update on the film’s sequel, Animal Park. Ranbir revealed that the team is currently working on the script for Animal 2 and is likely to begin shooting in 2027.
“We should start that film in 2027. It’s a bit away,” Ranbir said and then added, “He (Sandeep Reddy Vanga, director) just kind of flirted with what he wants to do with the movie. It wants to make it over three parts. The second part is called Animal Park. We have been sharing ideas from the first film itself, and how we want to take this story forward. It is very exciting because now I get to play two characters – the antagonist and the protagonist. It is an extremely exciting project with an extremely original director. I am very excited to be a part of it.”
Animal was released in theatres in December 2023. The film, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna in the lead, revolves around a man and his toxic relationship with his father. The film shows Vijay (played by Ranbir) as an anti-hero who would go to any lengths to protect his father, including gunning down 200 people with a machine gun. However, despite his efforts, he struggles to get a seal of approval from his emotionally unavailable father (played by Anil Kapoor).
However, following the film’s release, Animal also made headlines for all the wrong reasons. Despite being a box office hit, Animal was called toxic and misogynistic by many. The film earned over Rs 900 crores.
Meanwhile, Ranbir Kapoor recently wrapped the shooting of Ramayana. Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, the film also stars Sai Pallavi in the lead. Besides this, Ranbir also has Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love and War in his pipeline, where he’ll co-star with Vicky Kaushal and Alia Bhatt.
