Revisiting The Haunting Case Of Natalia Grace That Mirrored The Horror Film Orphan
The story of the 2009 film Orphan played out in real life.
Years have passed since a couple in central Indiana adopted a girl from Ukraine and later abandoned her.
If you have never seen the events of a horror movie unfold in front of you for real, this piece of news is exactly what you are looking for. Do you remember the 2009 psychological horror Orphan? The movie was directed by Jaume Collet Serra. The movie tells the story of how a married couple, mourning the loss of their child, adopt a 9-year-old girl from an orphanage, only to later realise the girl is in her 30s and is suffering from hypopituitarism, a condition that slows down ageing. To their horror, they find out she is actually a serial killer with a dark past.
Something of the absolute same nature happened in Ukraine about a little more than a decade back and made it to international news.
Years have passed since a couple in central Indiana adopted a girl from Ukraine and later abandoned her, after they were convinced that she was an adult pretending to be a kid. This led to a media frenzy around the world and a legal battle with authorities who accused them of neglecting their child. But even though a well-made docuseries recently debuted, expanding on the story, the enigma surrounding Natalia Grace’s almost unique adoption case continues to be unresolved.
The Barnetts assumed parental duties for Natalia, who was originally from Ukraine and had been placed for adoption at the age of six due to a rare bone growth disease that resulted in dwarfism. According to records, the Barnetts, who also had three sons, appeared to have quickly begun to question the veracity of Natalia’s stated age.
The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, a new documentary series, features Michael Barnett’s account of Kristine’s spine-tingling scream during a trip to Disney World when she discovered “full pubic hair” while bathing their new daughter, who was still approximately five years away from the typical age of puberty for girls. She had also begun menstruating, while women do not do that before the age of around 13.
Michael Barnett claims in the documentary that Natalia attempted to poison Kristine and even made threats to stab her new family. In the end, Michael, his wife, and his boys came to feel that they were living with a psychopath and con artist well beyond the age they thought she was.
After bringing Natalia to a doctor, the Barnetts soon learned that she was a real adult. They successfully petitioned an Indiana court in 2012 to lawfully modify her age from eight to twenty-two. According to court filings, the Barnetts rented an apartment for Natalia in Lafayette, Indiana, and left her there to live alone after the verdict significantly altered her age.
