This year has been a great one for Shah Rukh Khan. He has delivered two back to back blockbusters, Pathaan and Jawan. It was a grand comeback for Shah Rukh Khan after his dismal performance in his 2018-film Zero. The year 2018 shocked everyone, as many young stars outperformed top league industry veterans like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan at the box office.
Apart from Zero, Aamir Khan’s high budget film Thugs of Hindostan, which also had Amitabh Bachchan in the cast, tanked miserably. Salman Khan’s Race 3 was not a commercial flop, but it was a big critical failure and did not appear in the list of highest grossing movies either. On that note, let’s take a look at the top five highest grossing Bollywood films of 2018.
Sanju
Sanjay Dutt is one of those actors whose life has been marred with constant controversies. It was natural that a biopic on him would spark interest. Couple that with an astonishing performance by Ranbir Kapoor, who literally turned into Sanjay Dutt on screen; and we got the biggest blockbuster of the year. This Rajkumar Hirani-directorial collected Rs 586.85 crore at the box office.
Padmaavat
This movie was marred with endless controversies, right from inception, with many right wing factions threatening to boycott it. Some religious factions even threatened the actors. The controversy added to the immense hype for the film. Ranveer Singh completely wore the skin of Ala-ud-din Khilji in the movie and greatly contributed to its success. This Sanjay Leela Bhansali-movie earned approximately Rs 571.98 crore.
Andhadhun
This black comedy crime thriller film, co-written and directed by Sriram Raghavan, wove a tale around a genre rarely explored in Indian cinema. Ayushmann Khurrana’s performance of a man who is seemingly blind was largely appreciated. The film’s suspenseful plot also appealed to the audience, making it among the highest grossers of 2018. Andhadhun collected Rs 456 crore at the box office.
Simmba
The second instalment of Rohit Shetty’s cop universe with Ranveer Singh in the lead was perhaps the first film crossover that Hindi audiences had witnessed, with Ajay Devgn’s Singham character also appearing in it. The movie turned out to be a big success, collecting close to Rs 400 crore.
Baaghi 2
The sequel to 2016’s sleeper hit Baaghi pumped up the scale and action thricefold. It was a remake of the Telugu film, Kshanam. Tiger Shroff’s intense stunts and action sequences made this Ahmed Khan-directorial a big success, earning Rs 258 crore at the box office.
