Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah: Asit Modi Recalls Disha Vakani’s Dayaben Audition, Says ‘We Loved It’

Disha Vakani has been missing from Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah for years now. She went on maternity leave in 2018 and has not returned since.
Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah makers have been hunting for a new Dayaben for a long time now.
Disha Vakani became iconic after she starred in the popular sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah as Daya ‘Tappu Ke Papa’ Gada. Her portrayal of Dayaben was widely loved by all and made the actress a household name. While Disha has been missing from TMKOC for years now, in a recent interview, the show’s maker Asit Kumarr Modi recalled the actress’ first audition.
Asit Modi was speaking to SCREEN when he called Disha Vakani a “fine actor” and recalled what brief she was given when she was told about the character of Dayaben.
“When we explained the character to her, our brief was that she is a very innocent lady who looks after her husband, her father-in-law, and her world revolves around her son. Whenever she gets shocked, her reaction is always ‘Hey Ma, Mataji!’, it’s a very common reaction amongst people in Gujarat. During her audition, we were all sitting together, and when she played the part, we all just loved it. The reference to Dayaben calling Jethalal from the balcony comes from my mother. Whenever my father would go to work, he would forget something, and my mother would run behind him, calling him. We bought that innocence in her character; she doing garba was added later,” Asit Modi said.
The TMKOC maker further revealed how Dayaben’s iconic Garba style came into being and shared, “During the first episode, we thought of adding garba in the episode when Bapuji snorted, his hip gets stiff, that is when we decided to try if we could use Garba to rectify his stiffness. That’s how the craze for doing garba started. Daya Bhabhi’s style of garba was her improvisation. While shooting, we all try to take what is written in the script to the next level.”
Meanwhile, Disha Vakani has been missing from Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah for years now. She went on maternity leave in 2018 and has not returned since. Just a few months ago, Asit Modi exclusively confirmed to News18 Showsha that Disha would not be returning to the popular sitcom.
