The Sabarmati Report Movie Review; This Vikrant Massey-starrer Is Well-Acted
Rating: 3/5
Director: Dheeraj Sarna
Cast: Vikrant Massey, Raashi Khanna, Ridhi Dogra
Storyline:
The Sabarmati Report delves into the media coverage of the 2002 Godhra train burning incident – wherein 2 coaches of the Sabarmati Express were set on fire. 59 karsevaks, returning from Ayodhya, were the casualty of that horrific incident.
On one hand, we have the influential, English-speaking journalist Manika (Ridhi) who has a vested interest in framing the train-burning as an ‘accident’. On the other, there’s the righteous, Hindi-speaking journo Samar (Vikrant) who ends up losing it all when he tries to unmask the real conspiracy.
5 years later, a bitter, out-of-work Samar joins hands with Manika’s rookie intern Amrita (Raashi) to get to the bottom of what really happened that fateful day. The truth this time.
The Sabarmati Report Movie Review:
The Sabarmati Report is a well-acted film, interspersed with montages of real-life news footage from the 2002 Godhra train burning incident.
It is fast-paced, realistic and engaging in the 1st half…. not relying on too much melodrama. The Sabarmati Report attempts to balance the narrative though inevitably a certain bias seeps into the tone.
It is fairly interesting till the first half, but it goes off the rails in the latter half. Some scenes in the 2nd half challenge your suspension of disbelief. It is heavy-handed in the concluding sequence, especially during the courtroom drama. The film ends up being too in-your-face in its portrayal of the rivalry between English and Hindi journalists.
However, the movie works because of the excellent acting by the cast. Vikrant Massey is stellar as always – utterly convincing as the angry, bitter, sarcastic yet honest journalist. His eyes do all the talking for him.
Ridhi Dogra nails it with flair, oozing confidence, charm and just the right amount of arrogance required for the part. She steals the show here. Raashi Khanna is competent in her role and her chemistry with Vikrant is engaging as the duo goes off investigating in the latter half of the movie. Raashi ends up being overshadowed by Ridhi though.
The Sabarmati Report tries to handle things sensitively for the most part and takes care to not offend with outright sensationalism.
