Jaya Bachchan once opened up on how she felt when she first saw Dharmendra. The catch? Dharmendra’s wife, Hema Malini, was seated right next to her!
Jaya Bachchan’s candid nature has always been one of her most endearing traits, and she didn’t hold back during her appearance on Koffee with Karan Season 2 in 2007. Sitting alongside Hema Malini, Jaya lightheartedly revealed her crush on the dashing Dharmendra, much to everyone’s surprise. She recalled the first time she saw him, admitting she was so smitten that she hid behind a couch, struck by his charm. Even Hema Malini, Dharmendra’s wife, laughed it off.
Jaya Bachchan said, “I should have played Basanti. Because, I loved Dharmendra. When I saw him the first time I was introduced to him, there was a sofa like this. I went and hid behind it. I got so nervous! I didn’t know what to do. Fantastic looking man!”
As Hema Malini said that Jaya Bachchan was a ‘big fan’ of Dharmendra, Jaya added, “I still remember what he was wearing. He was wearing a white dress – White trousers and a white shirt or something. And he looked like a Greek God!”
To this, Karan Johar added, “Hemaji said the same thing when she first laid eyes on him.”
Hema Malini and Dharmendra’s relationship
Hema Malini and Dharmendra’s marriage was a hot topic back in the day. Hema Malini, known as the ‘Dream Girl’ of Bollywood, and Dharmendra, fell in love while filming Tum Haseen Main Jawan. However, there was a major twist: Dharmendra was already married to Prakash Kaur.
The story goes that Dharmendra was so taken with Hema Malini that he didn’t let his marriage stop him. Since his first wife wouldn’t agree to a divorce, they chose a different path. In a surprising move, they both converted to Islam to marry, with Dharmendra changing his name to Dilawar Khan and Hema becoming Aisha Bi. They had a private Nikah ceremony in 1980 and later celebrated with an Iyengar-style wedding to honor Hema’s heritage. Dharmendra and Prakash Kaur have four children: sons Sunny and Bobby Deol and daughters Vijeta and Ajieta. With Hema Malini, he has two daughters – Esha and Ahana Deol.
